Your first move when the earth shakes: “Drop, Cover, and Hold”

“Triangle of Life” theory is dismissed by quake experts.

The technique is not applicable for earthquake experiences in the

U.S. The safest response is to “Drop, Cover, and Hold” until the ground stops shaking.

With images of Japan’s devastating earthquake fresh on our minds, so is another round of Internet

misinformation about what should be your first move during an earthquake.

The King County Office of Emergency Management wants you to know that “Drop, Cover, and Hold”

is the best method to protect yourself during an earthquake in the United States, especially in our own quake-prone region.

“Unfortunately, emails have circulated recently, touting the ‘Triangle of Life’ technique,

which incorrectly claims that people can use ‘voids’ or ‘empty spaces’ as a way to survive

earthquakes,” said Hillman Mitchell, Director of the King County Office of Emergency Management.

“Simply put, the technique is not applicable for earthquake experiences in the United States.”

Experts, from medical doctors to international search and rescue teams, agree: “Drop, Cover, and Hold”

is your best move to reduce injury and death during an earthquake. Methods like standing in a doorway,

running outside, and searching for a potential “triangle of life” are considered dangerous and are not recommended.

Here’s why:

  • Many injuries from earthquakes are caused from people running around while the ground is shaking. They fall down, run into furniture, step on broken glass, or are hit by falling objects.

  • In and around older buildings especially, there is a much higher likelihood of broken windows, falling bricks, and other dangerous debris.
  • Despite the urge to flee, experts advise people to stay put – you are more protected indoors under a sturdy desk or table.
  • Earthquakes in the U.S. do not typically result in total building collapse (“pancaking”) due to high building construction standards.

The “Triangle of Life” theory also encourages people to roll out of bed on to the floor if caught asleep during an earthquake.

Again, quake experts agree that staying in bed can provide more protection during an earthquake than rolling onto the floor

beside it, where you could be injured by falling objects. Their point is this: the more you move during an earthquake,

the more potential there is for injury.

Bill Steele, seismology lab coordinator at the University of Washington, has years of experience

studying how earthquakes behave. “The emergency management community has worked for decades

researching earthquake response and recovery throughout the world and gathering best practices,” said Steele.

“We know what works. In the urgency of disaster, people need to instinctively know what to do. And the right message

is to ‘Drop, Cover, and Hold.’”

Being ready for an earthquake includes practicing what you’ll do when the earth shakes so that

a safe response becomes automatic. Residents and businesses are encouraged to participate

in the statewide earthquake drill on April 20th at 9:45 a.m., or to conduct their own drill at another convenient time.

Police Officer Alexander E. Thalmann

policeofc_alexanderthalmann

This is a story of how this Hero LIVED:
New Bern Police Department, North Carolina
Police Officer Alexander E. Thalmann – U.S. Marine
End Of Watch: 03-31-14 (1st of 2 this day)

Rookie Police Officer Alexander Thalmann, 22, was shot and killed by a fleeing suspect. A second young Officer also shot and wounded (details below). Born with a soul that has courage to wear the badge, Ofc. Thalmann had been Saving, Serving, and Protecting the People of New Bern for just seven months. But this True Blue Warrior answered his call to serve our beloved country and her People when he joined the United States Marine Corps. Lance Corporal Thalmann was currently serving as a Marine Corps Reservist with the Combat Logistic Battalion 451, Raleigh, North Carolina. In August of 2013, Brother Alex was sworn to oath for the New Bern Police Department where he brought with him his Courage, Dedication, and Integrity.

Extremely well-disciplined, Officer Thalmann greeted each new day with his ‘armor’ polished, inside and out, and with a positive attitude. A fearless young man who wanted nothing more than to make a difference in his small corner of the world. Brother Alex took no time to gain respect from his fellow Officers who quickly learned that this True Blue was willing to do anything and everything asked of him, and he did it all with a smile. Ofc. Thalmann was eager to assist whomever needed help and it didn’t stop at just those he worked along side of …

Ofc. Thalmann loved being out and about mingling with the residents. He took time to stop and speak with folks and reminded them that the Police were there to help them. He connected well with the youth and was already making a name for himself as one who you could go to, whether it be for help or to give information. And when dealing with those who broke the law, Ofc. Thalmann commanded his scene but always had his compassion at the ready. He listened to all sides of ‘the story’ and then took appropriate action but he was always humane when doing so, treating everyone with fairness.

This Brave and Benevolent Son and Brother of Blue was just starting his adult life. He had so much to offer us and though he was among us for such a short time, he has managed to leave us all with so much. May we carry forward and continue on his legacy he was creating by placing him upon our shoulders as we enter into our daily arenas and doing this work the way he knew it should be done … by Living As Only A Hero Could. May we always feel our young Brother’s hand on our backs knowing he has our six covered. And may we vow to his parents that we will never let their son be forgotten.

On 28 March 2345hours, Officer Thalmann had stopped a subject who was acting suspicious. Keeping to his oath to protect all, Ofc. Thalmann simply wanted to make sure this man was okay and ascertain his reasons for acting the way he was. This should have been no big deal, stop, talk, and then be on your way. That was not to be.

As Ofc. Thalmann and the subject were speaking, all of a sudden the man took off running. Brother Alex called for assist and the foot chase was on. With no warning, and as fellow Officer Justin R. Wester, 23, showed on scene, the suspect pulled out a handgun, turned toward the Officers, and began firing his weapon. Officer Thalmann was struck by gunfire to his face. Officer Wester was shot in his leg. The Officers fired back, killing the gunman. Both Officers were transported to the hospital. Ofc. Wester, who has 28 months on the force, was treated for his through-and-through wound and released the next day. Ofc. Thalmann was critical but was starting to show signs of stabilization the next day and he continued to fight tough to survive, Sadly, and with a heavy heart, that was not to be … this proved to be our Brother’s final battle … Police Officer Alexander Thalmann succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced just after 1300hours 31 March 2014 with his family by his side.

Alex leaves behind his mom and his dad, who is also a Police Officer. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Thalmann family, the Men and Women of the New Bern PD, the U.S. Marines, and all responding agencies, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero. Special healing thoughts and prayers extend to our Brother, Officer Justin Wester and his family.

Our Brother, as you now patrol the streets of Heaven may you continue your vigilant watch over us all as we carry on in the battles to come … In Our Brothers Honor. We thank you for your service and for your sacrifice. We thank you for your life. Job Well Done Son.

Rest In Peace Police Officer Alexander E. Thalmann # 190 … We Have The Watch From Here.    SALUTE!

Police Officer Robert German

ofc_robertgerman

This is a story of how this Hero LIVED:

Windermere Police Department, Florida
Police Officer Robert German
End Of Watch: 03-22-14

Officer Robert German, 31, was shot and killed during a suspicious pedestrians stop (details below). Born with a soul that has courage to wear the badge, Officer German had been Saving, Serving, and Protecting the People for five years. Living out his boyhood dream, this True Blue greeted each day with as much excitement and enthusiasm as his first, but with more experience. Donning his uniform with pride, Brother Robert was careful to keep his ‘armor’ polished, inside and out. From the creases in his sleeves to the compassion in his heart, Officer German took great pains to ensure he represented us all in the finest of fashion.

Officer German was adored by his colleagues and he tackled every task with a positive attitude and attention to detail. Nothing he did was treated as insignificant. Everything mattered and everyone was important. Brother Robert loved the citizens of Windermere and he went out of his way to make himself visible and available for anyone who needed help. You see, that is all this Brother ever wanted … to make a difference in his small corner of the world. And A difference he certainly made …

Courageous in battle, fearless in the face of danger, Officer German stayed focused and alert, keeping not only himself safe but his fellow Officers and citizens alike as well. Brother Robert never had to be asked to assist, he just showed on scene to make sure his brethren were well covered while they did what they had to do. And when dealing with those who broke the law, Officer German was able to command his scene and yet never let his ego be confused with his confidence. In fact, Brother Robert was a very humble man and did his job with no preconceived bias and treated everyone fairly and with respect. This garnered him much respect in return by all he crossed paths with.

Four months ago Brother Robert had injured his shoulder while in performance of his sworn duty. He had undergone surgery and worked incredibly hard to recover. From the first day on, all he wanted to do was to get back to the streets and in true Warrior spirit, he did just that. And that is not all he did. Brother Robert was a motivating and encouraging force for his fellow Officers and as another Officer was injured about the same time, he helped to get her back to where she needed to be in order to return. Only a few of weeks ago, he re qualified and was cleared fit for full duty … and man was he happy!! Without missing a beat, Officer German picked up where he left off, still with that skip in his step and that smile on his face. Officer German brought his motivating ways to the streets as well and encouraged the youth to do well. He taught them about choices and showed them by example that they can be whatever they dream to be if they work hard.

Sadly, his time back on the streets did not last long …

This Brave and Benevolent Son and Brother of Blue will be incredibly missed by so very many. We must vow to carry forward the legacy he left behind as we continue to create out own as we enter into our daily arenas. We must place him upon our shoulders and carry him with us, knowing he has our six covered as we remember how this Brother Lived As Only A Hero Could. May we never forget how he Gave His Life to Protect the People …

0400hours 22 March, Officer German came upon two pedestrians. Trusting his gut instincts, he immediately called for back-up and then approached the male and female. Moments later an Orlando Police Officer and an Orange County Deputy arrived on scene only to find Ofc. German laying in the roadway … he had been shot and critically wounded. As they went to rescue our Brother, additional gunshots rang out nearby. Four OCSO Deputies, an Orlando officer and an Ocoee officer did a tactical rescue. The Officers used their vehicles to retrieve their downed comrade as additional units arrived on scene. The Officers were able to get Officer German into their vehicle and drove him to meet up with EMT rescue personnel who then worked on Robert and rushed him to the hospital. During a search, two bodies were found deceased across the street. A young male and young female were found with what appears to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds. This is preliminary and we will update once investigation is complete.

Sadly, and with a heavy heart, we tell you that this proved to be our Brother’s final battle. Police Officer Robert German succumbed to his gunshot wounds and was pronounced shortly after arrival to the hospital.

Robert leaves behind his parents Tim and Debbie. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire German family, the Men and Women of the Windermere PD, the Orlando PD, the Orange County SO, the Orange County Fire Rescue Squad who tried so very hard to save our Brother, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero.

Our Brother, as you now patrol the streets of Heaven may you continue your vigilant watch over us all as we carry on in the battles to come … In Our Brother’s Honor. We thank you for your service and for your sacrifice. We thank you for your life. Job Well Done Sir.

Rest In Peace Police Officer Robert German …

We Have The Watch From Here.

SALUTE!

The killing of Officer German comes less than six weeks after Orange County Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Scott Pine, 34, was shot to death on 11 February as he investigated car burglaries about a half-mile from where Ofc. This is a story of how this Hero LIVED:

PoliceDetect_JohnHobbs

City of Phoenix Police Department, Arizona

Police Detective John Hobbs

(21 yr vet)
End Of Watch: 03-03-14
Detective John Hobbs;

43, was gunned down while attempting to apprehend a wanted violent felon. Though gravely wounded, this True Blue Warrior was able to engage his killer and neutralize the threat, shooting several rounds that hit his target, keeping him away from more innocents, and giving time for others to arrive. (details below). Born with a soul that has courage to wear the badge, Detective Hobbs had been Saving, Serving, and Protecting the People for more than 21 years. This highly decorated Brother Of Blue was incredibly well-liked and respected not only by his peers but by the citizens as well. Though known throughout the city as a courageous, tough, hard-working, and dedicated Police Officer who worked tirelessly tracking down the worst of the worse violent offenders, there was another side of Detective Hobbs that stood out just as much …

Almost all Law Enforcement Officers know at an early age that they want to become cops and with the common goal of ‘saving the world’. We soon realize that we have to settle for making a difference in our small corners of the world and that is exactly what this Brother of Blue did … he made a difference but in so many big ways. Brother John had an amazing compassionate side to him which he never lost even after all these years on the streets working the dope squad and other undercover assignments. One of which turned out to be one of the biggest drug busts in Arizona state’s history. On 05 May 1999, his unit discovered $500 million worth of Colombian cocaine. Detective Hobbs very well and very closely with many agencies, including federal, and no matter who he worked along side of, he was a welcomed addition. His training, experience, and natural born instincts made this one Brother you always wanted to work with.

With his ‘armor’ shined inside and out, Detective Hobbs hit the streets with an amazing positive attitude and upbeat demeanor. He took time to stop and speak with residents, went out of his way to follow up with the victims he comforted, and always made folks feel like they truly mattered to John …

because they truly did. With his kind words and sweet smile, Detective Hobbs made friends wherever he went. And being a fair Police Officer, even the bad guys had respect for this True Blue. His integrity made communicating with those in the know so much easier and so much more productive when seeking information from the streets. It was his love for the People that made him so good at his work. And for the last 7 years, Detective Hobbs has been with the agency’s specialized Major Offenders Bureau (MOB), doing what he does best … hunt down and bring in those who don’t play by the rules and who don’t care who they harm.

When not bringing in the bad guys, Brother John could be found spending quality time with his beautiful bride and three young children. Oh and how he loved this time together with family. John loved the outdoors and it is where he found his balance. it is also where he spent most of the time with his family and friends. Exploring life and living it to the fullest. This Brave and Benevolent Son, Husband, Father, and Brother of Blue will be incredibly missed by so very many. May we take a piece of our Brother’s legacy with us as we enter our daily arenas while continuing to create our own legacies. May we always feel his hand upon our backs. We must also vow to watch after his family and always remind his children how much their daddy was loved because of how he Lived As Only A Hero Could. May we never forget how Detective John Hobbs also Gave His Life As Only A Warrior Dare … Brother John was fearless in the face of danger and even his final act of valor shows us all what he was truly made of …

On Monday 03 March 1515hours, Detective John Hobbs, his partner, and a third detective, all from the Major Offender Bureau of the Phoenix Police Department, were attempting to locate a wanted violent felon who was believed to have shot a man last week (after just having been released from prison in January). The detectives spotted the suspect driving a car in the area. It is believed the suspect realized he was under surveillance and fled without getting out of his vehicle. The detectives followed the suspect who soon collided with another vehicle. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fled on foot. As Detective Hobbs and his partner, who was driving their car, pulled up and started to get out of their vehicle, the suspect began to fire at them with a handgun. The gunman was on the passenger side of the detectives’ vehicle and his gunfire struck both Detective Hobbs and his partner. Though mortally wounded and down, Detective John Hobbs returned fire and shot Thornton numerous times. His partner, who was also critically wounded, was unable to return fire at the suspect.

As the shooting was taking place, the third detective who approached from a different direction in an attempt to cut off the suspect, saw the gunman shooting at the other detectives and then himself fired at the gunman. The shooter was killed during the gun battle. The third detective then went to the aid of his injured comrades and administered first aid until Fire Department personnel took over and transported the two injured officers to the hospital. One Detective, 44 and a 9 year veteran to the badge, underwent surgery. He is still critical. His is remaining stable which is a good sign.
Sadly, and with a heavy heart, this proved to be our Brother John’s final battle. Detective John Hobbs succumbed to his gunshot wounds and was pronounced.

John leaves behind his beloved bride and three young children, 10, 8, and 6 years of age. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Hobbs family, the Men and Women of the Phoenix PD, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero. Special healing thoughts and prayers for our Warrior who is still critical (by request from family, we are not releasing his name at this time), his family, and to our third Officer (and their family) for being forced to take a life. Special thank you to the emergency personnel and hospital staff as well. PPD Chief Garcia is truly grateful to the citizens for their support & how they have opened their hearts in this time of tragedy.

Our Brother, as you now patrol the streets of Heaven may you continue your vigilant watch over us all as we carry on in the battles to come … In Our Brother’s Honor. We thank you for your service and for your sacrifice. We thank you for your life. Job Well Done Sir.
Rest In Peace Police Detective John Hobbs …

We Have The Watch From Here.

Deputy David “Bubba” Johnson….

david_bubba_johnson

This is a story of how this Hero LIVED:
Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Tennessee
Deputy Sheriff David “Bubba” Johnson
End Of Watch: 01-12-2014 – 30 yrs of service

Deputy Bubba Johnson, 52, was killed as result of a vehicle crash while on patrol (details below). Born with a soul that has courage to wear the badge, Deputy Johnson had been Saving, Serving, and Protecting the People for 30 years, the last 16 with the Montgomery County SO. Incredibly dedicated to his oath, to those he worked alongside of, and most importantly,

to the citizens, this True Blue Warrior was the most selfless and humble as they come. Brother Bubba began serving the people as an EMT working for the Montgomery County Ambulance service while also working for the Seay Oil Company. But it was just a matter of time before he could no longer deny his true calling. 27 years ago Bubba realized his dream and became a sworn Law Enforcement Officer with the Clarksville, Tennessee Police Department where he remained for 11 years.

And was he loving every minute of it …
There is no doubt Officer Johnson was meant to don the uniform and he represented us all so wonderfully. From taking pride in is ‘armor’, inside and out, to serving with compassion equal to his courage, Brother Bubba was fearless in the face of danger and fair when dealing with the public. The moment he showed on scene, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Fellow Officers knew their six was covered and never once doubted that their Brother was ready for anything and everything at all times.

Ofc. Johnson was always aware of his surroundings and alert to the anomalies, poised to take action if needed. But he added another comfort as well. You see, Ofc. Johnson had a way with People, always knowing the correct tone of voice, the right words, and this helped diffuse potentially volatile situations. He kept people calm, which anyone in law enforcement knows, can be the difference between life and death sometimes. Even when having to make an arrest, Deputy Johnson did so with humanity. He never made anyone feel bad when they made mistakes. He had a job to do but everything he did, he did so with respect, which in turn garnered him the respect he deserved.

After serving 11 years with distinction and heroism, Brother Bubba made the switch over to the Montgomery County SO where he brought with him experience, wisdom, and one heck of a sense of humor! Deputy Johnson was one of these LEOs who always seemed to have that extra ‘skip in his step’. You could tell he just loved being out there. He loved the work. Though he took his sworn duties and oath very seriously and could command a scene like no other, Deputy Johnson still managed to always have a smile on his face. Now anyone who has done this work for several years, knows it is hard to become jaded sometimes. Between the recidivism,

the politics, and the hatred of Police, it takes a strong mind to stay focused and unbiased. Well, Deputy Johnson was a pro! He never let the bad outweigh the good. He never let the atrocities overshadow the wonderful moments he got to experience. He found healthy outlets to keep his body and his psyche fit and this proved to be his best weapon against anything that this job threw at him and it is what helped him last through 3 decades of service. Learn from this my Brothers and Sisters.

When not rollin’ and patrollin’, Brother Bubba loved spending quality time with his family, closest friends, and even acquaintances. Oh how he loved to meet people, and the impressions he left, even if the meeting was a brief one, folks simply fell in love with the guy. Bubba had such a sweet disposition and approachable aura about him. He treated everyone as if they were his best friend and he would do anything in his power to assist anyone if help was needed. And if he couldn’t do it himself, he stopped at nothing to find someone who could help. And that folks, is what Police Officers do, what they are born to do, and it is what gave this man the greatest joy … knowing he was making a difference in his small corner of the world.

This Brave and Benevolent Son, Husband, Father, and Brother of Blue will be incredibly missed by so very many. This is a LEO who we can learn so much from, one who needs to be remembered for how He Lived As Only A Hero Could. May we carry a piece of his legacy with us as we enter into our arenas daily, knowing he has our back while we continue to create our own legacy. Brother Bubba leaves his fellow Officers, and with the People, all the good that a Police Officer should be known for. What almost all are. We owe him, and his family, to let our Brother never be forgotten.

On Sunday 12 January 2320hours, Deputy Johnson was on patrol when suddenly, for unknown reasons, his cruiser left the roadway and crashed into a tree. When emergency crews arrived, they found our Brother still belted in. This proved to be his final battle … Deputy Sheriff David Bubba Johnson succumbed and was pronounced. This is an ongoing investigation and we will update once more is learned, including autopsy findings if this was health related. Impairment is not suspected.

Bubba leaves behind his beloved bride Jennifer, daughter Shelby, parents Edward and Marion, and brother Ray, along with extended family members. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the entire Johnson/Seay family, the Men and Women of the Montgomery County SO, the Clarksville PD, and to all whom have had the pleasure and the privilege of knowing and working along side this True Blue Hero.

Brother Bubba, as you now patrol the streets of Heaven may you continue your vigilant watch over us all as we carry on … In Our Brother’s Honor. We thank you for your service and for your sacrifice. We thank you for your life. Job Well Done Sir.

Rest In Peace Deputy Sheriff David ‘Bubba’ Johnson

South Carolina Rookie Officer risks his own life to rescue trapped man………….

ofc_quentin

Alert South Carolina Rookie Officer risks his own life to rescue trapped man from drowning in frigid waters:

While on patrol last night 01/03/14 2300hours, Sumter Police Department’s Patrol Officer Quentin Eley noticed a vehicle floating several yards out in Second Millpond … and the vehicle was sinking. Brother Quentin, immediately pulled over and with no hesitation nor reservation nor thought of his own safety,

hurriedly stripped off his duty gear, vest, and boots and dove into the freezing water. He did not know if anyone was in the vehicle but this True Blue was going to do whatever he could in case there were victims and swam about 35 yards before reaching the vehicle. Ofc. Eley came upon one occupant trapped inside. Assessing in his mind, Ofc. Quentin quickly found a way to remove the driver and then managed to get him to the safety of land … alive.

This is yet another story of how no matter the where, no matter the who, and no matter the what needs to be done, a Police Officer will risk his/her own life if it means saving the life of another. We do not pick and chose a victim. How one gets him/her self into a situation is not the immediate concern.

If you need help, we are there to help. Though we do love to “bag the baddies”, there is no greater pleasure we get than knowing we saved a life. This story also reminds us that staying alert at all times, being ready for everything and anything at all times can result in not only keeping ourselves safe but how being aware of your surroundings can save the life of others. Ofc. Eley

demonstrates this and we are so very proud of our Brother for representing us all in the finest of fashion. We hope he takes this moment with him for his entire career. By the way, Brother Quentin has only been rollin’ and patrollin’ since August of 2013. What a way to start out eh?

South Carolina – Sumter Police Chief Russell F. Roark, III is so proud of his Officer, as we all are, and had this to say: “As officers, we don’t train specifically for this type situation. It’s a combination of instinct, training, and a willingness to act without hesitation to help others. Officer Eley displayed all these traits last night, saving Mr. Cimpean.” (who was drunk by the way registering a .19 BAC).

The Chief said Ofc. Eley was treated and released and was given a rest day off for his actions. (personally, we think he should get 3 off).

Officer Quentin Eley, we wish you an amazing and long safe career. Buckle up because this is just the beginning of a long and wild ride. You are our True Blue Hero. Job well done. Way to go Brother!

The driver, Mr Marcel Cimpean, 38, was treated and he will have to face his punishment. We just hope he realizes that his actions could have cost not only his own life, but the life of innocents … and the life of his rescuer.

True Blue Warriors

A HAPPY HANUKKAH and A HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all of our TBW members – Be Thankful Today … And Every Day:
As you sharpen the steel to carve the beast
With family gathered to enjoy the feast
While counting your blessings this Thanksgiving Day
Remember all those keeping the wolves at bay
Add thanks to the Warriors who are out on the call
And forget not those Heroes who gave us their all
Whether fighting the battles overseas or close by
The Bravest do so for you, without asking “why?”
So while giving thanks together at the table tonight
Please add “May our Warriors all come home safe
this Thanksgiving and Hanukkah night.” ~Nessie~
If you are thankful for our True Blue Warriors, and all of our Heroes near and afar, type “THANK YOU” in the comments
from all of us at True Blue Warriors … WE THANK YOU ALL!!

selfless San Diego (California) Police Officers risk their lives to save man from submerged van……………

“Hi, I’m flooding, I’m stuck in a car and the car’s flooding and I need help” – Two fast-acting, selfless San Diego (California) Police Officers risk their lives to save man from submerged van: On 21 November 2145hours, a 911 call came in from a 20 year old male driver stating he had gotten caught up in the flood waters and his van was stuck. His windows and doors would not open … and he was sinking. SDPD Officer Richard Perkins and Officer Dudley Ward arrived on scene and assessed. They could see the man flailing his arms from inside the van and calling for help. The Officers were going to wait for lifeguards and fire rescue to arrive since they were not equipped with the right gear and not trained in water rescue … but that choice was quickly erased as the van began to sink further. The Officers had to act fast … and they did just that …

Stripping off their utility belts and with no hesitation nor reservation, this Dynamic Duo waded into the chest-deep freezing dirty water and worked their way to the van and trapped driver. Officer Ward was able to break the window and the two Officers cleared away the glass and pulled the driver out. They then helped him out of the water and placed him on the warm hood of the patrol vehicle, knowing that hypothermia was a serious risk. The driver repeatedly thanked his life-savers. As they turned around, the van had sunk to its roof.
Paramedics treated all three for exposure to the cold water and did further evaluation since the water was so filthy. Ofc. Perkins took a tetanus booster as a precaution. The driver is resting at home … happy to be alive.
Brother Richard and Dudley represented us all in the finest of fashion … reminding the People that as much as we want to catch the bad guys, our greatest rewards come from saving a life. They remind us that no matter the call, we have to always be prepared to make quick assessments and act accordingly. Both of these Officers do not consider themselves Heroes and say they were just doing their job. Well, yeah but that is why WE are here … to Honor and recognize our humble Warriors.
So on behalf of all your Brothers and Sisters at True Blue Warriors, we thank you Officer Richard Perkins and Officer Dudley Ward for a job well done. You are True Blue Heroes. WAY TO GO BROTHERS!!!
(Ofc. Perkins, 42, is a married father of three and 14 year veteran to the force. Ofc. Ward, 28, who came to the United States from England, is engaged to be married, and a 5 year veteran to the force)
